I like what you're building. The core coaching is really good, the app runs smooth and it's a strong concept for a niche. As always I'm critical, because that's what helps.
1. Listing/ASO
- Lead with what the app does, e.g. "Preparing for a technical interview? ClearCutCode trains you to apply what you know, with a coach that grades every answer."
- Get it on the App Store too and do basic ASO (title, description, screenshots). Happy to share tips if you comment here.
2. Onboarding
- Account creation is quick and easy.
- Let me try before I sign up. One QuickCut without an account, or at least onboarding before account creation.
- Too long: 13 questions. Aim for under 30 seconds or people drop off.
- I answered "I feel calm and confident" and got "Where does that pressure manifest most?"
- Light mode would be nice, but not a dealbreaker for devs.
3. Paywall
- You ask me to pay before a single lesson. Give 1–2 free QuickCuts and/or a DeepCut first. Show what they'll achieve before the paywall, or I doubt you'll convert.
- After that, say "Keep going" instead of "Start". Paying to keep something is easier than starting something new.
- No cancel option in the app. Play seems fine with it, Apple likely won't be. Add manage subscription.
4. Your questions
QuickCuts and DeepCut
Did 3 QuickCuts and 1 DeepCut: a normal answer, a strong one, and one with 3 planted mistakes. Scores: 80, 80, 40, DeepCut 90.
HeadCoach
Asked why Edge Cases got 4 and 3 when I listed the cases. Fast and well written, but it restated the rubric instead of re-reading my answer and repeated a wrong claim about my text. If the coach gets my answer wrong, I stop asking.
Is the feedback valuable and actionable?
Yes, mostly.
- The next rep is always one clear thing to do.
- Since last time checks if I followed the advice. Best feature, protect it.
- Real reasoning mistakes get caught precisely, down to the exact input.
- It's about applying knowledge, not coding skill, like you intended.
Where it falls short is verification:
- Wrong negatives. QuickCut 2 said I didn't preserve input order, but my key ended with the original index and the same page credited me for it. Make every negative quote the line it refers to, or drop it.
- Edge Cases score. QuickCut 1: nothing missing, 4/10. QuickCut 2: five cases, 3/10. Show hits and misses and let the score follow.
- It doesn't check my claims. I said my plan returns D, it returns C, and I got credit. Run the procedure against the example.
- Strong scored same as normal (80/80), even though it confirmed I followed the advice.
- Docked for handling missing fields. If "stay inside the prompt" is the rule, say so in the drill.
- Deep Analysis repeats the quick feedback plus generic rubric text. Make it earn the tap or remove it.
- My one-line DeepCut pseudocode wasn't mentioned.
5. Bugs & UX fixes
- QuickCut 1 and the DeepCut were both interval merging on day one.
- "Fast and Accurate" on a 40% score, "over time" after 7 of 40 minutes.
- QuickCut hint gives away the approach. Put it behind a link like DeepCut.
- DeepCut loading shows a big Incomplete button. Looks like an error.
- Submit assessment vs Submit for grading: what's the difference?
- Back exits the whole DeepCut without asking, and I can't go to the previous step.
- Interview readiness went 1 → 10, still Getting started. Out of what?
- QuickCut 3 next rep headline didn't match the text under it.
What I love
- Instantly clear what to do on open.
- The coach card suggests the next drill, and it actually is that type.
- DeepCut follow-ups escalate like a real interviewer.
- Honest phone vs computer dialog.
- Drafts save and the timer pauses.
Bottom line
The coaching loop is really good. Move the paywall after the first lesson and make every judgement point at my actual text, and the scores become believable. 👏
