Overall
I honestly think this app is really cool. Unlike many apps I test, it's genuinely fun, and browsing other people's Augies keeps it interesting. Once you've made one and seen the result, it clicks. The biggest opportunity: make that first experience crystal clear.
Your questions
Creating your first Augie: The steps are clear (scan a surface → add a video), but the result isn't. I only got my "aha" moment after a couple of tries. Get people there on the first try and it's easy from then on.
Scanning: Mostly fast and reliable. Framing, alignment and the zoom while adjusting corners are excellent. I occasionally got an error scanning my TV, probably glare. Tell users why it failed "Tips" ("Too much glare, try tilting your phone").
Would I share one? Yes, but the sharing flow is confusing right now (see below).
1. Explain it very clearly
- Many people don't know what AR is. Lead with the outcome, e.g. "Turn any printed photo into a video" or "Hide a video inside any photo, card or flyer".
- Show the equation everywhere: this image + this video = this result.
- Add a short demo video to the App Store and Play Store listings.
- Make a reel and post it everywhere (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok), testing a few formats:
- Pick a flat surface: photo, frame, card, screen.
- Pick a video from your camera roll.
- When a phone sees that surface, the video plays on it.
- Share it. They download Augify, scan the same surface, and the video appears.
2. Onboarding
- Great first screen and animation, but it pauses my music even though the video is silent. Copy how Instagram Reels handles audio.
- I'm usually against long onboardings, but here it's worth it. Spend extra time making their first Augie great.
- Show the full tutorial the first time someone taps "Create Augie", then only via an info (i) icon.
- "Not yet / Create…" reads like a next step but acts as cancel. Drop "Create".
3. Login & settings
- Add Sign in with Google.
- WhatsApp login said I had no account. It should create one automatically, like Apple/Google.
- Settings as a guest opens a login screen I can't close. Add an X or swipe-down.
- Encourage sign-up. You want emails and real users.
4. Creation flow
- Drop the typewriter effect on the loading text.
- The "Your image is ready to come to life" overlay is too big for its text.
- Sound only plays on "Use video". Use sound and haptics throughout, or not at all. More micro-animations would help.
- Add video trimming (you recommend 10–30 sec but I can't trim).
- Same surface for multiple Augies picks the oldest one, and I couldn't delete an Augie. Make both clearer.
- After "Your Augie is ready", show an example of the result.
5. Feed & sharing
- The feed looks like separate images and videos. Make "scan this image → this video plays" obvious, maybe with autoplay.
- Explain how to use other people's public Augies.
- Lots of empty space on detail pages, and no comments.
- Support swipe-from-left to go back.
- The public link after publishing is confusing, and its error state needs UI work.
6. Product & monetization ideas
- Make it as easy as "scan this surface with this app" That's the only instruction a birthday-card recipient will follow.
- Sell picture frames and greeting cards with a QR code and a free-credit code. I'm 100% sure people would go crazy for this.
- Make public the default and charge for private. Free users create content, paying users get privacy (same dynamic we see on TestMyBuild).
- Offer templates and ideas, e.g. "Tell a friend with the same book to open page 300".
- Watch what users and creators publish for marketing angle.
Top 3 priorities
- Make the result obvious upfront with a demo video and reel.
- Make the first Augie a great one.
- Make sharing dead simple with a QR code.
One word: WOW!
